Nicknames: Panhandle, Mountain. State Data: Total Area - 24,170 Sq. miles; water, 148 sq. miles. Motto: "Montani Semper Liberi (Mountaineers Are Always Freemen)." State Flower: Rhododendron. Main Rivers: Ohio, Potomac, Big Sandy, Guyandot, Kanawha, Greenbrier, and Monongahela. Mountain Ranges & Topography: Allegheny Plateau in the west with high hills; Great Valley region in the east; no marshes; higher mountain ridges in the east. Shape of the state shows two "panhandles," or narrow extensions, from which the state nickname comes. National forest lands, 819,100 acres. Agriculture: Hay, corn, oats, wheat, potatoes (white, sweet), buckwheat, rye, tobacco, apples, and other fruits and vegetables. Livestock and dairy farming. U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Morgantown. U.S. Land-Grant College: College of Agriculture of West Virginia University at Morgantown. Manufacturing includes: Iron and steel products, glass products, railroad construction and repair, lumber products (especially hardwoods), meat products, leather, refined petroleum, pottery and porcelain, coke, carbon black, and chemical products. Geology: Minerals: Coal, natural gas, natural gas gasoline, petroleum, limestone, sandstone, glass sand, clay, gravel, sand, and iron. Leading Cities: Huntington, Charleston (capital), Wheeling, Clarksburg, Parkersburg, Fairmont, Bluefield, and Morgantown.
Climate- Medium temperate. Average annual temperatures: winter, 26 degrees to 34 degrees (latter in southwest); summer, 67 degrees to 74 degrees (in the southwest). Annual rainfall over 50 inches in the mountains, less elsewhere. Heavy snows in winter.

Food- Traditional American food in most communities. Chinese food is also prevalent.
Foreign Visitors- Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus. This test does not apply to tourists. Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.
