Wisconsin was a local Indian name, probably the first given to the river of that name.   

Nicknames:  Badger.   State Data: Total Area:  56,066 sq. miles; water, 810 sq. miles.   Motto: "Forward."  State Flower:  Violet.  Main Rivers:  Mississippi, Wisconsin, Fox, Black, Chippewa, St. Croix, Rock, Menominee, Wolf, and Peshtigo.    Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Mostly rolling plains.  Some fluffs along the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers.  Some isolated hills.  Over 500 miles of shore on Lakes Superior and Michigan, with many adjacent islands, including the Apostle Islands in Superior and Washington Island in Lake Michigan.  A long peninsula juts northward into Lake Michigan.  Chequamegon and Green Bays.  Thousands of glacial lakes, the largest being Lake Winnebago.  Other lakes are Geneva, Green, "four lakes" near Madison, Poygan, and hundreds of small lakes near the Michigan boundary.  Many marshes within the state.  Agriculture: Dairy and livestock products account for four/fifths of Wisconsin's farm income.  Hay, oats, corn, barley, rye, wheat, and peas are the leading crops.  The state produces a large number of minor farm products, such as flax, berries, apples, and cherries.  Wisconsin has more acreage in vegetables for canning than any other state.  The United States Agricultural Experiment Station and the Land-Grant College are at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  The State Department of Agriculture, in charge of Marketing, Statistics, and regulatory work, is at the State Capital in Madison.   Manufacturing includes:  Dairy products (especially cheese), motor vehicles, foundry and machine shop products, paper and wood pulp, lumber products, meat products, automobile accessories, knit goods, boots and shoes, furniture, engines and water wheels, electronics, software, electrical machinery and supplies, rubber tires, brewery products, leather, and printing and publishing. Geology: Minerals: Iron, lead, zinc, copper, stone, granite, lime, sand and gravel, clay products, and mineral waters.  Leading Cities: Milwaukee, Racine, Madison (capital), Kenosha, Green Bay, La Crosse, Sheboygan, Oshkosh, West Allis, Superior, Eau Claire, Appleton, Wausau, Fond du Lac, and Wauwatosa.

Climate-   Snowy winters and moderately warm summers.  Moderate humidity.  Average annual temperature 41 degrees to 47 degrees, according to latitude;  average rainfall 32 inches, average snowfall 44 inches varying from 36 to 53 inches in different parts of the state.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
