Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.

History- Prior to 1836, the area that is now Washington was inhabited by several tribes of Indians including: The Yakima, Quinault, Cayuse, Chinook ( who have not been recognized by the U.S. Government), and several others.  James Cook visited the N.W. Coast in March of 1778.  Lewis and Clark passed through the area near the Columbia river in 1805.  Hudson Bay company trappers worked the area from 1800 to 1840.  One of the first wagon trains to bring settlers to Oregon included Marcus and Narcissa Whitman.  They finally ended their epic journey settling on a piece of land near Walla Walla. (Indian words meaning "many waters")  They called the place Waiilatpu "place of rye grass."  Because of the crops, gristmill, and blacksmith shop the Whitman Mission became an important stop for wagon trains in the early 1840's.  Early in 1845, most trains took a shortcut that bypassed the Whitman Mission.  Emigrants went their only if they were sick, or low on supplies.  In 1847, one train brought measles, most white children recovered but half of the Cayuse tribe died, having no resistance to the disease.  This brought on the "Whitman Massacre" where in a rage, two Cayuse Indians killed Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, and eleven others.  You can see the official "Whitman" Nation Park Service web site here: http://www.nps.gov/whmi
