Vermont is from two French words meaning "green mountain."

Nicknames:  Green Mountain  State Data: Total Area:  9,528 sq. miles; water, 440 sq. miles   Motto: "Freedom and Unity."  State Flower:  Red Clover   Main Rivers:  Connecticut, Nulhegan, Passumpsic, Wells, Waits, Ompompanoosue, White, Ottauquechee, Black, Williams, Deerfield, Hoosac, Battenkill, Winooski, Lamoille, Mississiqua, and Otter Creek.  Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Several mountain ranges, especially the Green Mts..  The following peaks: Mt. Mansfield, 4,393 ft.;  Killington, 4,241 ft.; Mt. Ellen, 4,135 ft.; Camels Hump, 4,083 ft.;  Cutts Peak 4,080 ft.; Mt. Abraham, 4052 ft.; Mt Lincoln, 4,012 ft.  Lake Champlain, over 100 miles long including several islands in the northwest forming one Vermont county by themselves.  Southern top of Lake Memphremogog enters the state.  There are more than 400 lakes within the boundaries of the state.  Agriculture: Hay, apples various vegetables and the hardier fruits, and maple sugar and syrup (in which Vermont leads).  Some livestock and dairy farming.  Home of the Morgan horse (U.S. Morgan Horse Farm located at Weybridge).  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Burlington.  U.S. Land-Grant College:  College of Agriculture of the University of Vermont at Burlington.     Manufacturing includes:  Stone work, woolen and cotton textiles, paper and wood pulp, flour and grain products, dairy products, metal-working machinery, lumber products, knit goods, foodstuffs, printing, and publishing.   Geology: Minerals:  Stone, slate, talc, lime, granite, marble, soapstone, asbestos, and clay.   Leading Cities: Burlington, Rutland, Barre, and Montpelier (capital).

Climate-  Temperate, cool summers, cold winters.  Average annual temperature: between 40 degrees and 47 degrees, being colder in the east and in the mountains.  Annual rainfall 38 inches; snow from November to March, averaging 90 inches annually.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
