State Data: Total Area: 42,023 square miles; water, 360 square miles    Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Elevation: Lowest, Mississippi River (in Shelby County), 182 ft.; highest, Clingmans Dome, 6,643 ft.; average, 900 ft.  Unaka range of the Appalachian System is in the east, including Great Smoky, Iron, and Stone Mts., with numerous ridges, especially in the northeast.  Westward the Cumberland Plateau drops toward the Mississippi River.  Long Bluff overlooking the Mississippi flood plain.  There are swamps and ponds with Rellfoot Lake in a depression formed by the earthquake of 1811.  High mountain peaks;  Clingmans Dome, Mt. Le Conte (East and Middle Peaks), Laurel Top, and Chimney Tops.  National forest lands include 876,000 acres.   Chief Rivers:  Tennessee, Cumberland, Mississippi, Clinch, French Broad, Little Tennessee, Duck, Stone, and Wolf.  Agriculture: Corn, oats, wheat, hay, cotton, tobacco, other cereals and various vegetables.  Livestock and dairy farming.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Knoxville.  U.S. Land-Grant Colleges;  College of Agriculture of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State Teachers College.   Manufacturing includes:  Knit goods and rayon, prepared foods, lumber products (oak, yellow pine, gum, yellow poplar, hemlock, and chestnut), flour and grain products, railroad construction and repair, cotton textiles, cottonseed products (oil, meal, and cake), printing and publishing, chewing and smoking tobacco, and snuff.   Geology: Minerals:   Coal, iron, copper, petroleum, rock phosphate, cement, clay products, stone, marble, zinc, gold, silver, sand, gravel, lime, barite, and lead.  Leading Cities:  Memphis, Nashville (capital), Knoxville, Chattanooga, Jackson, and Johnson City.  

Climate-   Pleasantly mild.  Average annual temperatures;  Summer 63 degrees in the mountains, 72 degrees on the Cumberland Plateau, 78 degrees in the lowlands of the south and west;  winter, about 38 degrees average for most areas.  Annual rainfall is 50 inches;  snowfall about eight inches.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
