Dakota means "allied", from the Dakotas (Sioux) Indians.

Miles  Motto:  "Under God the People Rule."   State Flower:  Pasque Flower   Main Rivers:  Missouri, Cheyenne, White, Big James, Grand, Moreau, and Sioux.   Mountain Ranges:  Topography:  Mostly broad rolling plains;  Black hills in the southwest; Coteau des Prairies, low hills, in the northeast;  Bad lands in the southwest, formed by erosion, with many fossil deposits.  1,269,812 acres of National forest land.  Lake Traverse and Big Stone Lake, and many other smaller lakes.  Agriculture: Corn, hay, wheat, barley, flax, potatoes, oats, hardy fruits, cane, sorghums, and various vegetables.  Livestock and dairy farming.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station At Brookings.  U.S. Land-Grant College:  South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Brookings.   Manufacturing includes:  Flour and grain products, meat packing, dairy products, bakery products, lumber products, and highway construction.  Geology: Minerals: Gold (Homestake Mine is one of the largest producers of gold in the country), silver, tungsten, lead, granite, lignite, feldspar, and some coal deposits.   Leading Cities: Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Mitchell, Huron, Watertown, Yankton, Lead, Aberdeen, and Pierre (capital).

Climate-   Variable, coldest in the northeast, warmest in the southwest.  Average annual temperatures:  42 degrees in the northeast, 48 degrees in the southwest.  Annual rainfall: 14 inches in the  northwest, 30 inches in the southeast.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
