New York was named after the Duke of York (1664), who took possession of New Netherlands for the British crown.

Nicknames:  Empire, Excelsior  State Data: Total Area - 46,204 sq. miles ; water, 1,550 sq miles  Motto: "excelsior (Ever Upward)."  State Flower:  Rose   Main Rivers:  St. Lawrence, Delaware, Hudson, Raquette, Black, Niagara, Susquehanna, Mohawk, and Genesee   Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Mountains in the northeast, with Mt. Marcy, level plateau to the south, except for the Mohawk Valley;  Catskill Mountains in the southeast, with Slide Mt. (4,205 feet);  all the mountains are mostly forest-covered; low Shawangunk Mountains descending toward southeast to lowlands,  into slight highlands along the Hudson River, forming the famous Palisades.  The Hudson forms an excellent harbor for New York, and admitting the tide up as far as Troy, navigable for about 150 miles.  Thousands of lakes and ponds, the largest being beautiful Lake Champlain in the northeast, some 100 miles long, and the beautiful Lake George to the south;  others, Onedia, Canandaigua, Seneca, Cayuga, Skaneateles, Saranac Lakes, Saratoga, and Chautauqua.  Some 270 miles of lake shore along Lakes Ontario and Erie.  Sea coast, though short, is very important, because it forms New York harbor.  Long Island, area 1,376 sq. miles is the largest island in the continental United States.  Manhattan Island, about 22 sq. miles holds a part of New York City.  other islands are Staten, Grand, City, and several of the famous Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence waterway.  East River is a part of New York Harbor and is not really a river, but a strait.  Long Island Sound is between Long Island and the Connecticut shoreline. Agriculture: Farming is very important.  Hay, ornamental plants and nursery products, wheat, corn, oats, barley, buckwheat, rye, dry beans, potatoes, apples, peaches, pears, strawberries, cherries, grapes, onions, green peas, green beans, cauliflower, celery, cabbages, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, turnips, sweet corn, cucumbers, rhubarb, parsnips, and maple sugar.  Large amounts of dairy farming, and production of wool, lamb, pork, eggs, and poultry.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Stations at Geneva (State Station) and Ithaca.  U.S. Land-Grant College: New York State College of Agriculture at Ithaca.   Manufacturing includes:  Just about every product is manufactured under some name in New York City.  New York city is the leading printing and publishing center of the united states.  Income from manufacturing is very large.   Geology: Minerals:  Clay products, gypsum, cement, stone, sand, gravel, salt, petroleum, natural gas, iron, lime, talc, zinc, emery, abrasive garnet, magnesium, and graphite.  Leading Cities:  New York City is one of the largest cities in the entire world (New York City includes the areas of Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Richmond.) , Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany (capital), Yonkers, Utica, Troy and Schenectady.  

Climate-  Temperate in the north, extremely variable, hot in the summer, cold winters.  Average annual temperatures; about 45 degrees, ranging from 50 degrees at New York City to 40 degrees in the northern mountains, and extremes of 100 degrees (rare) and a few degrees below zero (in the north).  The annual rainfall is 40 to 45 inches with heavy snowfall in the Adirondacks.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
