Nicknames:  Silver, Sagebrush, One Sound State.  Motto:  "All for Our Country."  State Flower:  Sagebrush. State Bird:  Blue Bird.  Nevada is from a Spanish word meaning "snow-clad,"  referring to the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains, which received the name first.

TOPOGRAPHY:  AREA:  Total, 110,690 sq. miles; water, 869 sq. miles.  6th in size in the lower 48 states.   Boundaries:  N., Oregon, Idaho; E., Arizona; W., California.  Elevation:  The mean elevation of the state is 5,500 feet.  The elevation drops as low as 500 feet in the southeast corner along the Colorado River.  Highest peak in the state is Boundary Peak with an elevation of 13,145 ft., in Esmeralda county.  CHIEF RIVERS:  Few of Nevada streams find an outlet to the sea, but the Owyhee River and several other streams in the northeast corner of the state flow into the Snake River, near the old Ft. Boise area, and the extreme southeast corner is drained by the Colorado river.  The Humboldt, Nevada's longest river, flows across the state in a crooked channel for over 600 miles and empties into the Humboldt and Carson Sinks.  The Walker, Truckee, and Carson rivers are important streams which have their outlets in lakes and sinks.  The lakes, with the exception of Lake Mead, created by the Bolder Dam Project in the 1930's, have no outlet, and their brackish waters contain one-tenth as much salt as the water of the sea.  Beautiful Pyramid Lake, thirty-one miles in length, seven to eleven miles in width, and of great depth, is the largest body of water lying wholly within Nevada.  Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada-California border, 6,223 feet above sea level, with its deep , clear blue water, is one of the most beautiful aWorldTouristnd distinctive lakes in America.  Lake Mead, named for the late Dr. Elwood Mead, Commissioner of Reclamation, is a very large reservoir in the southern part of the state on the Colorado River.  Other lakes are Ruby, Franklin, Snow Water, Walker, Winnemucca, Humboldt, and Carson. Several small deserts (devoid of vegetation, are mostly "alkali flats").

Climate- Nevada has a mild and dry climate.  In general, the rainfall varies with the altitude.  There is only a  three-inch average precipitation in the large Carson Sink.  The average annual precipitation for the state is but nine inches.  In general, there are extreme ranges in temperature with cold winters and hot summers, and the daily variations are as great as is common in most dry regions of moderate to high elevations.

History-  Search the State Website (Click Here!) Late history of Nevada is centered around Virginia City, Carson City (capital), and Tahoe/Sacramento Trail. The famous Comstock Lode was discovered in Virginia City in the late 1850's.  49er's from California invaded the area and the Comstock was one of the richest Gold areas in that part of the country.  The Virginia city area is highly mineralized with many schist's of quartz protruding from every sandy hillside.  The word schist is Greek, meaning to split, referring to the easy separation of these rocks in a direction parallel to the minerals.  Carson City received so much gold the U.S. Government decided to place a mint there!  When the Comstock mine closed,  the mint followed.  A Carson City Mint mark is today, highly prized among coin collectors.
