Nebraska is an Omaha Indian name, meaning "flat water," for the river Platte, which is French for "flat". 

Nicknames:  Antelope, Black Water, Cornhusker, Tree Planters' (by act of legislature, 1895).  State Data:  Motto: "Equality Before the Law."  State Flower: Goldenrod.   Main Rivers:  Missouri, Platte, North and South Platte, Republican, Loup, Elkhorn, Niobrara, Big and Little Blue, and White River.      Mountain Ranges: Great rolling Plains. Topography: The notorious "Bad Lands," about a thousand square miles, now known as the Pierre Shale Hills or Gumbo Plains.  Large region of sand hills.  Two small ranges;   Wild Cat and Pine Ridge, with typical buttes.  207,209 acres of national forest land.   Agriculture: Corn, wheat, oats, barley, rye, hay, sugar beets, potatoes, buckwheat, flax, clover seed, and sorghum (or syrup).  Livestock, poultry, and dairy farming.  Irrigation is extensively used in the western part of the state.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Lincoln.  U.S. Land-Grant College;  College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.   Manufacturing includes:  Meat products (Omaha stockyards are very important), dairy products (butter, cheese, evaporated milk), flour and grain products, railroad construction and repair, bakery products, printing and publishing, confectionery, leather goods, lumber, millwork, and concrete products.   Geology: Minerals:  Of slight importance compared with the other states, but including cement, sand, gravel, clay products, stone, and potash.  At various time in history Nebraska has miniature "Gold Rushes," but although gold was found in the gravel in Seward and Saline counties in 1859, it was not in sufficient quantities to be profitable.  In 1932 gold was again discovered, this time in a gravel pit in Red Willow county.  A flotation mill was built and the gold separated from the gravel by this process.  Estimated at $4 to $16 dollars of gold per ton of ore.  In 1939 on a chilly November day "Black Gold", (oil) was discovered in Richardson county (Falls City). Leading Cities: Omaha, Lincoln (capital) Grand Island, Hastings, North Platte, Scottsbluff, Beatrice, Kearney, McCook, Fall City, Freemont, Norfolk, and Nebraska City.

Climate-   Inland (continental).  Average annual temperatures;  winter, 23 degrees; summer, 74 degrees.  Annual rainfall, 24 inches.  Prevailing northwesterly winds, with some south and southwest winds in mild seasons.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
