Dakota means "allied", from the Dakotas (Sioux) Indians. 

Nicknames:  Flickertail, Sioux.  State Data: Area - Total 70,837 sq. miles; water, 654 sq. miles  Motto: "Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable."  State Flower:  Wild Prairie Rose   Main Rivers: Red, Mouse, James, Cheyenne, Little Missouri, Souris, heart, Cannonball, Missouri and Yellowstone.  Mountain Ranges:  Buttes in the southwest, including Black Butte, Sentinel Butte, Camel's Hump and Killdeer Mt. Topography:  Mostly plains and grassland, with very little forest;  much evidence of glacial action, with several lakes, often salty or alkali.  West of the Missouri River are the strikingly eroded "bad lands," often causing picturesque effects.  Agriculture: Wheat, oats, barley, rye, flax, corn, hay, and potatoes.  Livestock and dairy farming.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Fargo.  U.S.  Land-Grant College: North Dakota Agricultural College at Fargo.    Manufacturing includes:  Grain products, dairy products (butter, cheese, condensed and evaporated milk), and clay.   Geology: Minerals:  Some lignite or brown (low grade) coal.   Leading Cities: Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot, Jamestown, Devils Lake, Valley City, Williston, Mandan, and Bismarck (capital).   

Climate-   Dry and uniform, with sharply separated seasons, short summers.  Average annual temperature 39 degrees, ranging from 110 degrees above to 54 degrees below zero, but due to dryness, extremes are not unpleasant most of the time.  Annual rainfall about 19 inches.  Some tornadoes, generally high winds, hailstorms, and hot winds from the south in the summer.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
