Mississippi is from the Indian name of the river, meaning "great stream." 

Nicknames:  Bayou, Magnolia.  State Data:  Motto: "Virtute et Armis (By Virtue and Arms)."  State Flower:  Magnolia   Main Rivers:  Mississippi, Yazoo, Big Black, Pearl, Pascagoula, and Tombigbee.  Mountain Ranges:  Topography: Mostly low level lands, requiring many levees to keep out the flood waters of the rivers.  Low and marshy along the Golf coast.  About 85 miles of coastline, with white, sandy beaches, and small bays, including St. Louis, Biloxi, Pascagoula, and Point aux Chenes.  Also several islands, including Petit Bois, Horn, Ship, and Cat.  Agriculture:  Cotton, corn, oats, sugar cane, wheat, hay, peanuts, sweet potatoes, apples, plums, pears, apricots, melons, strawberries, peaches, grapes, figs, tomatoes, pecans, citrus fruits, and tung oil trees, livestock and dairy farming.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Mississippi State College.  U.S. Land-Grant Colleges;  Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College at Mississippi State College.   Manufacturing includes: Lumber and timber products (especially yellow pine and turpentine), cottonseed products (oil, cake, meal) cotton textiles, railroad, wood preserving, and resin.  Geology: Minerals: Limestone, coal, gypsum and clay.   Leading Cities: Meridian, Jackson (capital), Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, Laurel, Biloxi, Natchez, and Greenville.

Climate-   Mild, with extremes in the north.  Average annual temperatures: 67 degrees on the coast, 61 degrees on the northern boundary.  Annual rainfall 51 inches.  Prevailing winds are south-easterly;  rain-bearing winds south-westerly.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
