State Data:  Total Area:  69,420 sq. miles;  water, 698 sq. miles   Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Elevation:  Lowest, St. Francis River (in Dunklin county), 230 ft.; highest, Taum Sauk Mt., 1,772 ft.; average, 800 ft.  Main Rivers:  Missouri, Mississippi, Osage, Gasconade, Merrimac, St. Francis, Black, Grand, and Salt.  Missouri is divided into four great regions;  The North Missouri Glacial and Loessian Region.  The Southwest Missouri Prairie Region.  The Ozark Region.  The Southeast Missouri Low-land Region.  The Mississippi River flows along the eastern boundary for 545 miles.  Missouri has several large caves.   Agriculture:  Corn, hay, wheat, oats, potatoes, cotton (lint), sorghum (forage), apples, tobacco, and other vegetables and fruits.  Livestock (especially mules) and dairy farming.  The Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station is a division of the College of Agriculture of the University at Columbia;  the Missouri State Fruit Experiment and Missouri State Poultry Experiment Station are at Mountain Grove;  School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri at Rolla.    Manufacturing includes:   Geology:  Minerals:   Lead, clay products, cement, coal, building stone, zinc, silver, shale, limestone, pig iron, copper, and barites.  Leading Cities:  St. Louis, Kansas City (not to be confused with the adjacent Kansas City, Kansas), St. Joseph, Springfield, Joplin, University City, Hannibal, Cape Girardeau, Sedalia, Independence, Columbia, and Jefferson City (capital).

Climate-   Humid, long summers.  Average annual temperature, 55 degrees; summer, 76 degrees; winter 32.7 degrees; annual rainfall, 39 inches.  Heavy rains in the spring; dry clear autumns.  Ice storms in the winter and tornadoes are not uncommon in the summer.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Russian and Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
