Minnesota was the Sioux Indian name of the local river, meaning "blue water."
Nicknames: Gopher, North Star. State Data: Area Total - 84,682 sq. miles; water, 3,824 sq. miles (excluding part of Lake Superior under Minnesota jurisdiction. Motto: "L'Etoile du Nord (The Star of the North)." State Flower: Moccasin Flower. Main Rivers: Mississippi, Red, Minnesota, St. Croix, Cannon, Zumbro, and Root. Mountain Ranges & Topography: Hills in the north. Much of the original forest has been cut. Land is rolling and almost flat. Over 150 miles of shore on Lake Superior. Bluffs and cliffs along Mississippi River below the St. Croix.. Numerous swamps and many thousand glacial lakes. On Canadian border is the famous Lake of the Woods, where the international boundary westward along the 49th parallel begins. Next largest lake, Red Lake (Upper and Lower), 494 sq. miles; others, Rainy Lake, on Canadian border; Minnetonka near Minneapolis, with many islands; Leech Lake, Winnibigoshish Lake, Vermilion Lake, and Mille Lacs. One part of Minnesota on the northern shore of Lake of the Woods is not contiguous with the state as a whole. Also some small islands. National forest lands 1,966,804 acres. Agriculture: Wheat, corn barley, oats, rye, flaxseed, hay, alfalfa, all small grains, potatoes, vegetables, livestock, dairy, and poultry products, leather and wool. U.S. Agricultural Experiment station at University Farm, St. Paul. U.S. Land-Grant College; Department of Agriculture of the University of Minnesota, University Farm, St. Paul. Manufacturing includes: a wide variety of products. Flour and grain products, meat packing, canning, dairy products, linseed oil and cake products, lumber products and wood pulp, wool and textiles, printing and publishing bakery products, iron and steel products including farm machinery and railroad repair. Electronic products and software. Geology: Minerals: Iron, granite, and limestone. Minnesota produces over half of the iron ore mined in the United States. Leading Cities: Minneapolis, St. Paul (capital), Duluth, Winona, Rochester, St. Cloud, and Hibbing.
Climate- Generally rather cold. Average temperature is 45 degrees in vicinity of Minneapolis and St. Paul and southern parts of the state; 37 degrees in the northern part. Normal annual rainfall is 25 to 32 inches decreasing from east to west. Snowfall is 25 to 65 inches, heaviest in the northeastern part of the state.

Foreign Visitors- Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus. This test does not apply to tourists. Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.
