Michigan is from the Indian name of Lake Michigan, meaning "big water." 

Nicknames:   Wolverine, Auto.  State Data: Total Area - 57,980 sq. miles; water, 500 sq. miles (excluding jurisdiction over adjacent Great Lakes area, about 40,000 sq. miles.   Motto: "Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice (If You Seek A Beautiful Peninsula, Look About You."  State Flower:  Apple Blossom.  Main Rivers:    Muskegon, Grand, St. Joseph, Manistee, Kalamazoo, Montreal, Menominee, St Clair, Detroit, St. Mary's River. Au Sable, and Saginaw.  Mountain Ranges & Topography:  State is divided into two peninsulas by the Straits of Mackinac.  Most of surface rolling, with some marshes and low mountains in the north.  Michigan's shore line is 1,625 miles, one of the longest of any state in the 48 adjacent.  Many bays, including Keweenaw, Whitefish, Potagonnissing, Big Bay De Noc, Green, Grand Traverse, Thunder, and Saginaw.  Thousands of glacial lakes, including Gogebic, Manistique, Burt, Black, Houghton, Higgins, Crystal, Hubberd, Torch and Mullet.  Many islands in the Great Lakes, including the Manitous, Beaver, Bois Blanc, drummond, sugar, Grand, Isle Royale (more than 55 miles long and 18 miles wide, in Lake Superior, and Mackinac Island.  Agriculture: Hay, corn, potatoes, wheat, oats, dry beans, sugar beets, fruits, barley, rye peppermint, grapes and various vegetables.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at East Lansing.  U.S. Land-Grant College;  Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science At East Lansing.   Manufacturing includes:  Automobiles, trucks and parts, foundry and machine shop products, furniture, engines, paper and wood pulp, brass products, bronze and copper products, lumber and timber products, meat products, food preparations, bakery products, dairy products (cheese, butter, and condensed mile)  chemicals and drugs, threshing machines, printing and publishing, stoves and ranges, electrical machinery, shipbuilding, and airplane production. Geology: Minerals: Iron, copper, cement, salt, clay products, coal (inferior quality), gypsum, marl, and limestone, oil, and graphite.   Leading Cities: Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Saginaw, Lansing (capital), Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Bay City, and Ann Arbor.

Climate-   Except in the southwest, extremes of temperatures rather great, ranging from 108 degrees above to 48 degrees below zero.  Average summer temperature in June 64 degrees, July 69 degrees, Aug. 67 degrees; average winter temperature, Dec.25 degrees, Jan. 21 degrees, and Feb. 20 degrees.  Annual rainfall is 33 inches.  Prevailing westerly and northwesterly winds.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
