Maine is the name of an old French province. 

Nicknames:  Pine Tree  State Data: Total Area:  33,400 sq. miles; water 3,145 sq. miles  Motto: "Dirigo (I Direct)." State Flower:  White Pine Cone and Flower Main Rivers:  St. John, Penobscot, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Saco, (most have numerous falls and rapids), St. Croix, Salmon Falls, Aroostook, and Piscataqua.      Mountain Ranges & Topography: Rolling uplands, with isolated peaks in the north, including Mt. Katahdin, Saddleback Mt., Mt. Abraham, Mt. Bigelow, and Mt. Blue.  Glacial traces throughout the state; 2,465 glacial lakes, including Moosehead, Long, Grand, Sebago, Chesuncook, and Eagle.  Some 2,500 miles of seacoast, deeply indented with bays and inlets, making fine harbors and splendid beaches.  Many islands are used as resorts.  Forest wilderness in the north, with 1,215,000 acres of National forest lands. Agriculture: Potatoes are the principal crop, and hay ranks second.  Other crops are oats, sweet corn (for canning), apples, blueberries, dry beans, and buckwheat.  Livestock, poultry, and dairy farming are carried on.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Orono.  U.S. Land-Grant College;   College of Agriculture of the University of Maine at Orono.  Fishing:  Herring ("sardines"), lobster, cod, haddock, clams, smelt, hake, swordfish, and mackerel.  Manufacturing includes: Electronics, software, cotton and woolen textiles, paper and wood pulp, boots, and shoes, worsted goods, and lumber products (spruce, fir, pine balsam birch, cedar, hemlock, and hardwoods), shipbuilding, printing and publishing.    Geology: Minerals: Granite, lime, clay products, slate, feldspar, sand, gravel, and iron.  Leading Cities: Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, Biddeford, Auburn, Sanford, Westbrook, Bath, Augusta (capital), and Waterville.

Climate-   Cold, moist; short summers.  Average annual temperatures;  winter 20 degrees, summer 62 degrees.  Annual rainfall 44 inches.  Annual snowfall 85 inches.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
