Louisiana was named after King Louis XIV of France. 

Nicknames:  Pelican, Creole   State Data: Total Area:  48,506 sq. miles; water, 3,097 sq. miles  Motto: "Union, Justice, and Confidence." State Flower:  Magnolia  Main Rivers:  Mississippi, Red, Ouachita, Sabine, and Pearl.  Many bayous, including Teche, Plaquemine, Atchafalaya, Lafourche, and Boeuf.      Mountain Ranges:  Topography:  Mostly a recently formed coastal plain, especially the delta of the Mississippi River; some pine hills, bluffs, prairies, coastal marshes, and alluvial plains.  Many levees along the Mississippi River, and on Cypress and Amos Bayous.  Many lakes and lagoons or landlocked bays, including  Pontchartrain, Borgne, Maurepas, and Sabine;  "oxbow" lakes cut off from rivers.  1,500 miles of seacoast with many bays.  Agriculture: Cotton, sugarcane, corn rice, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, citrus fruits, strawberries, vegetables, hay, pecans and other nuts, and some tobacco. Livestock raining.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Stations at Baton Rouge, Calhoun, Crowley (rice station), and Hammon (fruit and truck station).  U.S. Land-Grant Colleges;  Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College at Baton Rouge. Fishing:  Shrimp, oysters, squeteagues or "sea trout," red drum or redfish, red snapper, and sheepshead.   Manufacturing includes:  Lumber and timber products (yellow pine, cypress, cedar, red gum, oak, tupelo, ash), celotex, paper and wood pulp, sugar molasses refining, food preparations, polished rice, cottonseed products, ethyl alcohol, bags (other than paper), bakery products, chemicals, clothing, sea-food canning plants, railroad construction and repair, petroleum products, and carbon-black. Geology: Minerals: Petroleum, sulphur, natural gas, gasoline, stone, salt, and clay products.  Leading Cities: New Orleans, Shreveport, Baton Rouge (capital), Alexandria, Monroe, and Lake Charles.

Climate-  Semi-tropical and equable.  Average annual temperature range, from 70 degrees in the southeast to 65 degrees in the northeast.  Annual rainfall 55 inches.  Tidal storms and virtual cloudbursts.  Occasional floods.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
