Kentucky is the Indian name and has been interpreted into three meanings:  "Dark and Bloody Ground," "Land of Tomorrow," and "The Great Meadow."

State Flower:  Goldenrod   Main Rivers:  Ohio, Mississippi, Big Sandy, Tug, Licking, Kentucky, Salt, Green, Tradewater, Cumberland, and Tennessee.  Mountain Ranges & Topography: Elevation:  Lowest, Mississippi River (in Fulton County), 257 feet; highest, Big Black Mt., 4,150 feet; average, 750 feet.   Agriculture: Corn and Tobacco are the principal crops.  Other crops are hay, potatoes, wheat, oats, sweet potatoes and yams, hemp, and fruit.  Livestock and dairy farming.  Kentucky thoroughbred horses are world famous.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Lexington.  U.S. Land-Grant Colleges: College of Agriculture of the University of Kentucky at Lexington, Kentucky State Industrial College at Frankfort.   Manufacturing includes:  Iron and steel products, farm products, lumber products, railroad construction and repair, flour and grain products, tobacco products (including snuff), meat products, men's clothing, refined petroleum, foundry and machine shop products, distilled liquor products.  Geology: Minerals: Coal, petroleum, clay products, natural gas, rock asphalt, fluorspar, lead, zinc, limestone, sandstone, cement, and pig iron.  Leading Cities: Louisville, Covington, Lexington, Newport, Paducah, Ashland, Owensboro, Bowling Green, Henderson, and Frankfort (capital).

Climate-   Rather mild temperature.  Average annual temperatures:  55 degrees, ranging between 100 degrees and 10 degrees below zero.  Annual rainfall is about 45 inches.  Little snow; west or southwest prevailing winds;  cold waves from north and northwest.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
