 Florida is from the Spanish name of Easter, Pascua Florida, so named by Ponce de Leon either because he sighted the coast soon after Easter or because he saw so many flowers.

Nicknames:  Everglade, Land of Flowers, Peninsula.  State Data: Total Area;  58,667 sq. miles; water 3,807 sq. miles  Motto: "In God We Trust."  State Flower:  Orange Blossom   Main Rivers:  St. johns, Caloosahatchee, Suwannee, and Apalachicola.    Mountain Ranges & Topography: Mostly level country, with rolling hills in the north.  Thousands of lakes - 30,000 + between Gainesville and Lake Okeechobee, the largest (1,250 sq. miles; names of some of the lakes are Crescent, Orange, Weir, Harris, Eustis, Apopka, Tohopekaliga, Kissimmee, Istokpoga, and George. 3,700 miles of coast line; harbor-like bodies of water formed by reef and small islands, which are called lagoons, lakes, bays, and harbors.  Everglades, a kind of swamp, in the south; also several swamps, especially Big Cypress Swamp in the south and Okefonokee Swamp in the north (partly in Georgia).  Many springs and subterranean streams.  Florida Keys, a long series of islands, extending southwest from the southern tip to Key West.  620,000 acres of National forest lands.  Agriculture: Oranges are the most valuable crop, grapefruit ranks second; also corn, potatoes (white, sweet), peaches, cotton, hay, sugar cane, snap beans, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, avocados, watermelons, pecans, pears, bananas, grapes, figs, and limes. Fishing:  Kingfish, tarpon, mullet, shad, red snapper, pompano, trout, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, sponges, oysters.  Turtles were once harvested!    Manufacturing includes: Software, electronics, lumber and timber products, naval stores (turpentine, resin), cigars, tobacco products, fertilizer.  Geology: Minerals:  Important phosphate deposits (for fertilizer);  also lime, limestone, travertine, brick, tile, kaolin (porcelain clay), fuller's earth, and gypsum.   Leading Cities: Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Pensacola, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Lakeland, Tallahassee, Hollywood; Ft. Lauderdale, Key West, and Ft. Myers. 

Climate-  Like the Gulf states in the north; Florida is semi-tropical in the middle part; sub-tropical to the south of Lake Okeechobee, including Palm Beach.  Average annual temperatures: for the whole state 71 degrees, with extremes of 103 degrees and 13 degrees in the north.  Annual rainfall 53 inches.  Many health resorts, because of the warm, salubrious climate; and also fashionable winter resorts.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
