Connecticut is a corruption of an Indian name for the Connecticut River, or "Long River."

Nicknames:  Constitution, Nutmeg, Land of Steady Habits.  State Data: Total Area:  4,965 sq. miles; water, 145 sq. miles  Motto: "Qui Transtulit Sustinet (He Who Transplanted Sustains)." State Flower: Mountain Laurel   Main Rivers: Connecticut, Housatonic, Thames, and Naugatuck.     Mountain Ranges & Topography: Surface is rolling, broken by low ranges of wooded hills, with isolated peaks in the west:  Bear Mt., Gridley Mt., Mt. Riga, Mt. Ball, and Lion's Head.  Connecticut River navigable to Hartford;  Thames, to Norwich.  Much evidence of glacial action on the topography.  Several pretty lakes, especially Bantam, Pachaug, Highland, Pocotopaug, Shenipsit, Candlewood, and Twin Lakes.  Seacoast of about 100 miles, with several bays and harbors, especially at Bridgeport, New Haven, and New London.  Agriculture: Hay is the principal crop, tobacco (famous broadleaf) is still produced, also potatoes, corn, apples, dairy products (milk, butter, cheese), and poultry products.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Stations at New Haven and at Storrs.  U.S. Land-Grand College:  Connecticut State College.   Manufacturing includes: Especially hardware; also hats, clocks, plated ware, firearms and ammunition, brass and bronze products, electrical machinery and apparatus, cotton textiles, silk textiles, woolen textiles, airplane construction, ships (shipbuilding), foundry and machine shop products, cutlery, jewelry and rubber tires and shoes.  Geology: Minerals: Some Iron, granite, sandstone, feldspar, sheet mica, and sand.  Fishing: Oysters, lobsters, flounders, menhaden, and cod.   Leading Cities: New Haven, Hartford (capital), Bridgeport, Waterbury, New London, Stamford, and Meriden.

Climate-   Temperate, with less severe changes than other New England states.  Average annual temperatures; winter 27 degrees, summer 72 degrees; extreme cold in the northeast as low as 15 degrees below zero; extreme heat in central part as high as 100 degrees.  Annual rainfall is about 45 inches.

Food-  Traditional American food in most communities.  Chinese food is also prevalent.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
