State Data:  Area:  Total, 53,335 Sq. Miles;  water, 870 sq. miles   Nicknames:  Arkansas is an Algonquin name of the Quapaw Indians.  Bear, Bowie, Wonder (by state act of 1923, because of exceptional resources).  Motto:  "Regnat Populus (The People Rule)."  State Flower:  Apple Blossom.  State Tree:  Pine  Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Main rivers:   Arkansas, Red, Ouachita, White, and St. Francis.  Many swamps and bayous in the eastern section.  The Ouachita Mts. south of the Arkansas River, the Boston Mts. north of it;  streams in deep gorges, almost canyons.  2,063,000 acres of national forest lands.   Agriculture: Cotton, corn, oats, rice, potatoes (white, sweet), hay, fruit (peaches, apples, plums, pears, and grapes), pecans, melons, and tobacco.  Lumber products:  cottonwood, poplar, catalpa, red cedar, ash elm, sycamore, sweet gum, maple, various pines, hickory, various oaks, and cypress; hardwoods are especially important.  Stock-raising, dairy farming, and poultry farms.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Fayetteville.  U.S. Land-Grant Colleges:  College of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; Agricultural and Mechanical College at Monticello.    Manufacturing includes:  Lumber and timber products (especially furniture); railroad construction and repair; cottonseed products; printing and publishing; smelted and refined minerals.  Computer software and hardware. Geology:  Petroleum, is the principal mineral;  some coal, natural gas, whetstones (novaculite), antimony, bauxite (leading supplier of the nations aluminum ore), clay (for pottery), granite, building stone, diamonds (only known float of diamonds in the U.S.), zinc, lead, manganese, and cinnabar (mercury ore). Leading Cities:  Little Rock (capital), Fort Smith, Pine Bluff, North Little Rock, Hot Springs, El Dorado, and Texarkana.

Climate-   Typically southern and healthful.  Average annual temperatures:  winter 41 degrees, summer 79 degrees.  Seldom severe cold weather;  usually no summer drought, the year 2001 is an exception!  annual rainfall between 34 and 64 inches.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
