Alabama was the name of a native Creek tribe of Muskhogean stock.

State Flower:  Goldenrod  Main Rivers:  Tombigbee, Black Warrior, Alabama, Tallapoosa, Mobile, Tensaw, Chattahoochee, Tennessee, and Coosa    Mountain Ranges & Topography:  Mountains in northeast, Cumberland plateau in north.  Appalachian valley to southeast, lowlands in the west.  Raccoon and Lookout Mts. in the east.  Largely alluvial plain along the coast;  seacoast of 60 miles.  Mobile Bay and Mobile River forms a splendid fresh water harbor.  Agriculture:  Cotton, corn, hay, wheat, potatoes (white, sweet), peanuts, oats, syrups, tobacco, sugarcane, fruits, and cottonseed.  U.S. Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn.  U.S. Land-Grand College:  Alabama Polytechnic Institute of Auburn.  Livestock raising and fertilizer.  Manufacturing includes:  Iron and steel products, especially pig iron and cast-iron pipe; coke; cement; electric equipment, cotton textiles; cottonseed oil and meal.  Lumber products;  yellow pine, poplar, oak, gum, maple, ash, hickory, cypress; turpentine and rosin products;  shipbuilding, and railroad car construction. Geology: Minerals: Much iron and bituminous coal; also coke, silver, gold, cooper, tin lead, marble, graphite, cement, clay, and limestone.  Some of the marble from Alabama has been used in government buildings in Washington.  Leading Cities: Birmingham, Mobile, Montgomery (capital), Bessemer, Anniston, Gadsden, Tuscaloosa, and Selma.

Climate-   Temperate, uniform; semitropical along the coast.  Average annual temperatures;  winter 46 degrees, summer 79 degrees.  Snow is rare; annual rainfall 51 inches; many thunderstorms; south prevailing winds.

Foreign Visitors-  Foreigners entering the United States must carry two documents: A valid Passport, expiring not less than 6 months prior to the scheduled end of their visit to the U.S.; and a tourist visa obtainable at any American consulate at no charge. Anyone applying for an immigrant's visa must obtain a screening test for the AIDS-HIV virus.  This test does not apply to tourists.  Any visitor with a medical condition that requires treatment with narcotics or with paraphernalia must carry a valid, signed prescription from their doctor.  Travel insurance is optional in the US but required by most car rental companies.  See our link on money conversion for foreign guests.
